As the Head of the Engineering & Design group, you will collaborate with the President and leadership team to drive the successful execution of all engineering and design projects, optimizing departmental policies and procedures for efficiency and cost-effectiveness. This leader will champion continuous process improvement, foster a collaborative culture, and mentor team members to drive innovation and growth.
what you will do…
Leadership and Management:
- Inspire, coach, and develop a high-performing engineering and design team.
- Align team capabilities with evolving production demands.
- Strategically assign projects, set ambitious goals, and track progress to ensure timely and quality deliverables.
- Champion manufacturability in product design, adhering to stringent company standards.
- Lead pioneering projects, setting benchmarks for “first of kind” products.
Technical and Project Skills:
- Formulate and execute innovative engineering strategies to achieve company objectives.
- Uphold the highest standards of quality and precision in engineering outputs.
- Maintain comprehensive licensing, code, and reference resources for the engineering team.
- Provide expert technical guidance and mentorship to build team growth and project success.
- Drive the adoption of 3D CAD tools and simulation (FEA) to optimize designs and engineering workflows.
- Establish and implement best practice DFM (Design for Manufacturability) and DFA (Design for Assembly) principles.
- Develop a comprehensive framework for geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T) stack-up analysis to enhance precision and manufacturability.
- Ensure all technical designs adhere to safety, compliance, and company standards.
Collaboration and Problem-Solving:
- Partner and engage with shop personnel, equipment vendors, and customers to meet and exceed all technical and operational requirements.
- Oversee the integration and optimization of design tools to align seamlessly with production needs.
- Collaborate closely with production and supply chain teams to validate and optimize designs.
- Ensure design drawing accuracy and adherence to standards.
- As a leader in the organization ensure safety initiatives are upheld promoting a culture of safety and compliance.
Requirements
What you need to have…
- 8+ years of experience and proven leadership expertise in mechanical design with working knowledge of 3D CAD design and simulation (FEA).
- Extensive knowledge of geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T), performing GD&T stack-up analysis with a strong focus on ensuring manufacturability and precision.
- Demonstrated experience taking projects from concept to production.
- Proven track record of supporting assignment of part numbers, creation of BOMs, and other documentation.
- Familiarity with designing for processes like cutting, forming, machining, and fabrication.
- Experience designing for a variety of materials, including mild steel, stainless steel, aluminum, and composites.
- Knowledge of best practice DFM (Design for Manufacturability) and DFA (Design for Assembly) principles.
- Fundamental knowledge of structural dynamics and its application in mechanical and structural design.
- Experienced in partnering with internal production and supply chain teams to validate designs.
- Strong communication skills and the demonstrated ability to work collaboratively toward solutions.
- Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering or a related discipline.
